History

S igma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded November 12, 1922, by seven African American women who were school teachers in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The women wanted to offer an opportunity for fellowship and encourage professional growth through the exchange of ideas.  The Sorority incorporated as a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha Chapter at Butler University.  The Sorority has grown over the years to more than 85,000 members and has expanded its reach to include 500 chapters in the US, Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany and Korea.

The Sorority provides service to the community through its national programs. All national programs and initiatives are under the “umbrella”, Project Reassurance, which seeks to enhance the quality of life within its communities.  Public service underpins its volunteer efforts in the areas of leadership development, youth education and economic empowerment.
